One of the best things to do while in Santorini is the hike from Oia to Fira (or the other way around).
It’s a very unique experience, you walk from one village to the other, following a path on the caldera.
It might not sound so extraordinary but, believe me, it is indeed!
The trekking from Oia to Fira is certainly a good workout!
A 11km distance that you can travel starting from Oia, passing through Imerovigli and Firostefani and ending in Fira.
It’s suitable for everyone, beginners included!
Hike outfit suggested is: shorts, t-shirt and a jacket in case of a windy day. Sport shoes or boots are recommended even though I have to confess I did it more than ones with sandals. I know…
For the fast ones it will be a 2hr and 30min speed walk, but no stops for pictures!
If your aim is to enjoy the view and take some photos, walk with friends and family, it will probably take you 3 to 4 hours.
Hike essentials are also sunglasses, sunscreen, water and some snacks as for about 5km you won’t meet any cafe or similar.
Over the summer I would do it in the early hours of the day but that’s not rocket science 🙂
Over the past 12 years I had done this at least one time whenever in Santorini.
I did it always by myself.
I found it a liberating experience, just strolling around the path, admiring the volcano and breathing its fierce energy.
This year I did it with my friend Jen who was visiting in September.
We woke up VERY early and we were ready to start from Oia at around 7am!
It was not only my first time with a friend but also doing it starting from Oia.
To my surprise I found it a bit more difficult than starting from Fira, not sure why, maybe it’s just a matter of getting older!!
Jen and I shared a lot of thoughts about our lives, about social media, about veggie food (our common passion!)… All of this while enjoying the stunning panorama in front of us.
I was very happy that Jen loved it as much as I do.
We arrived in Fira after 4 hours and we had a lovely brunch! The perfect way to finish this hike! We needed some energy as you may understand!
Santorini is a good destination for hiking lovers!
There are so many hiking trails to discover, some very popular (but still beautiful) like the Oia-Fira, others more hidden like this one I have shown you recently.
Put your shoes on, walking is the best way to understand a new place!
